What Is Yacht Rock, Actually?

Here's the twist almost nobody knows: "yacht rock" wasn't a genre in the 1970s. Nobody in a recording studio in 1979 turned to their bandmate and said, "let's make some yacht rock." The term was coined in 2005, decades later, by the creators of a comedy web series of the same name — J.D. Ryznar, Steve Huey, Hunter Stair, and David Lyons — as a loving, tongue-in-cheek label for the smooth, immaculately produced soft rock of roughly 1975–1984, music that was originally marketed as "adult-oriented rock" or the "West Coast sound."

What actually defines it? High-fidelity studio production, clean vocals, and light, catchy melodies built by some of the best session musicians alive — think the "Doobie Bounce" rhythm feel and generous use of electric piano. It's a blend of soft rock, smooth soul, jazz, R&B, and disco. AllMusic put it best: "keep it smooth, even when it grooves."

The genre's central figures include Michael McDonald (its most influential voice), Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, Steely Dan, and Toto — with The Beach Boys' beach-and-sailors aesthetic as a spiritual ancestor.

The satire became genuine affection became genuine respect: HBO's Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary (2024) holds a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. A joke that survived being made fun of and came out the other side beloved — that arc is the yacht rock life philosophy.
